My notes from a recent MozCon video on how to promote your content, from Brian Dean.
Spend 20% of your time writing unique content, but spend 80% of your time promoting it.
- Create content that will appeal to other people who run websites if you want to get links. Appealing to the masses is nice, but appealing to the people that can actually link to your content is better.
- Don’t just put an external link in your social post. Treat it like any other landing page: 1) Hook 2) Tell them what you are going to tell them 3) Link / CTA
- Avoid outreach emails asking for links. Instead, create outreach emails that people want to reply to, like offering help for broken links. Resource: hunter.io finds emails of people
- Use email outreach before you actually post. Generate interest ahead of time. Resource: BussSumo.com, find content that performs the best. Also Resource: explodingtopics.com
- Boost your FB post. FB Ads getting in front of new people is expensive, but retargeting the people who already visit your site, but may not be on your email list by boosting is cheaper.
- Use Reddit. Example: write article supporting 1 presidential candidate, then appeal to those supporter. Write another article for the opposing candidate, and appeal to those supporters.
- Newsletters are still the best outreach. Plain text email got 50% more clicks.
