Patrick’s HTML website is over 11 years old. In 2019, the flash player showed warnings, the site was not mobile friendly, and the content had never been updated. The website overall was ranking on the 4th page of Google. Patrick was happy with the overall design: a simple, white site featuring and few images and 1 specialty font. No design changes are included in the scope of this project.
The first thing I did was get the site mobile friendly because 58% of the population is looking at their phone ¹. Next I added some new content and added meta data to all content. I resolved the video error message on the home page and resolved any issues within Google Search Console.
These are the technical steps I took:
- add Bootstrap and make the site mobile-first
- look at Search Console and resolve “content wider than screen”
- add mobile nav button to all pages
- Save video as mp4 and self host with HTML5 video player (youTube?)
- Add meta data and page titles
- force https with rewrite in .htaccess
- add sitemap.xml to Search Console
- research keyword volume
- add keywords to H1, ALT, Title, and navigation
- add schema: VisualArtwork to home, and Creativework to pet-portraits
